Aspen Food and Wine Classic Overall review
This is a pricy venue to get into and you get a lot for that ticket, just maybe not what you are thinking. We had ideas of massive quantities of food and crazy amounts of things to try. What we actually saw was so much more wine than food. Again, this isn’t a bad thing, just a good thing to know going in. We got so much inspiration from attending the sessions and have come home so inspired that we got an almost 300.00 grocery bill but some amazing pasta for our “troubles.”
We came face to face with chefs we have been watching for years on our TV screens and that was fantastic. We had the opportunity to get some books signed by some of our culinary heroes and they all seemed so nice and happy to meet with the people they inspire. Not once did we see any of the chefs being unkind or impatient with all of the photos and requests being made of them.
The Aspen Food and Wine Classis is a class act, but you can wear your jeans or shorts. If you don’t have special tags and want to sit close during the sessions, you will need to stand in line for an hour before the show starts, even then, you may be several rows (4 to 5) back. Sunscreen is critical if you don’t want to burn. It doesn’t matter if you typically don’t burn, you are over a mile closer to the sun, so bring your protection or you will end up a crispy critter. Always keep an eye on the weather. The staff mentioned years past and said people were waiting in line in rain and one year, snow.
WATER!!!!We are lucky enough to live in Colorado so this wasn’t an issue for us but it was for others. PLEASE DRINK PLENTY OF WATER, EVEN IF YOU AREN’T DRINKING ALCOHOL. By early afternoon on Saturday, there had already been 5 sun strokes and it was in the lower 80s. Alcohol, altitude, and dehydration are a recipe for disaster and one you don’t want to try.
Also, not sure if this is a new thing or something they always do but the grand tasting is all done on grass and you can SMELL IT. The smell of grass is almost overwhelming, all of this is said to state, if you are allergic to grass, bring your medicine as it may be difficult for you.
We are happy to be at home implementing what we have learned, but are sad to have left this beautiful city where the amazing people at Food and Wine have pulled of an incredible feat. Will we go again? You bet your brisket we will!
